PORTLAND, Maine — The Gulf of Maine Research Institute recently announced the promotion of Dr. Andrew Pershing to the position of Chief Scientific Officer.
Dr. Pershing will lead GMRI in conducting vital research necessary to understand and manage the Gulf of Maine ecosystem. Prior to being promoted, he had a joint appointment as research scientist at GMRI and a faculty member at the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences.
Dr. Pershing’s research focuses on how climate variability and change impact the animals in the Gulf of Maine. He has looked extensively at changes in zooplankton populations, and more recently, has begun looking at climate impacts on lobsters, herring and cod. He is actively involved in regional and national efforts to adapt fisheries to climate change.
