The Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure received a check today for $15,000 from Gateway Title, in addition to nearly $3,000 the Gateway teams raised for the Bangor and Portland Race for the Cure events. Gateway Title raised the majority of the funds through a fundraising promotion, donating $50 from each closing performed during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Originally starting with a goal of raising at least ten thousand dollars, Gateway surpassed this goal by thirty-six percent and the owner generously decided to round the donation up to $15,000. All of Gateway Title’s offices in Maine, as well as Portsmouth, NH, were involved in the fundraiser. Several individuals donated directly when they saw Gateway’s promotion at their closings. In addition, McPhail Realty in Lincoln decided to do a matching donation for the closings they did with Gateway in October, providing another $450 to the fundraiser.
“Gateway Title has become an amazing partner in our mission to end breast cancer,” said Sally Bilancia, Komen Maine Affiliate’s Executive Director, “This cause is personal to them because they have several employees who have been affected by breast cancer. They embraced this project with enthusiasm and made it a success to help the people of Maine.”
Komen and its Affiliates are known for their dedication to filling existing gaps in breast health and breast cancer needs. To make sure they are addressing needs that no one else is meeting in their own service areas, Komen Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with Komen’s promise to end breast cancer forever.
The Komen Maine Affiliate is an independently incorporated organization, employing local people, using local vendors and providing funding for needed services right here in Maine. Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested more than $1.9 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
