Mr. Fred Weinberg, recently retired from Mt. Ararat High School, was recognized as the recipient of the Walter J. Taranko School Library Media Specialist of the Year. Peggy Becksvoort, past-president of the Maine Association of School Libraries, coordinated with the principal of Mt. Ararat to surprise Mr. Weinberg with the award at one of the last staff meetings of the school year. The award is intended to honor individuals who have made a significant contribution to the library media profession in Maine on the local and/or state levels.
In nominating Mr. Weinberg for this award, it was noted that he has developed the library media curriculum and provides direct instruction to students in accessing and using a variety of online sources. The instructional purpose of this is to help students develop the academic research skills that they need to support their studies. He consults with classroom teachers to ensure the curriculum and instruction support each other. Mr. Weinberg and the library support staff strive to help students by providing authoritative resources that are geared to their curricular needs. He teaches students in groups and individually in appropriate ways to access our resources and navigate and evaluate the resources that they find online.
Mr. Weinberg provides Readers Advisory to students on a daily basis. This can be as simple as finding that next book to read for pleasure or finding a book that fits a particular curriculum requirement for outside reading. The library media center has a reading lounge with comfortable furniture in a pleasant setting that students can access during study hall, lunchtime, before or after school.
Mr. Weinberg is also a problem solver. Over the last few years, all areas of school programming have received reduced funding. Mr. Weinberg worked with staff and other teachers to (a) determine priorities for LMC funding and (b) to determine strategies to maintain quality library media center programming. Despite budget cuts for the last four years, not only has the library continued to provide quality service, but there is quantitative data that indicates electronic/technological services provided by the LMC have improved significantly.
Mr. Weinberg also took a leadership role in preparing a funding proposal for a new library management system. He met with the school technology coordinator, district technology coordinator, and the librarians from the seven elementary schools in the district.
In addition to a certificate and plaque, $1000 will be given to the library media program at Mt. Ararat High School in Mr. Weinberg’s name. Congratulations to Mr. Fred Weinberg, Maine’s School Library Media Specialist of 2012!
