DEXTER – Fossa’s General Store in Dexter will be having a “Soft Opening” this Thursday, June 27th at 10 am after 3 1/2 years of starting and stopping … starting and stopping on the construction due to forces outside of their control.
Dexter Regional Development Corporation’s (DRDC) Executive Director Judy Wilbur Craig said, “We sure do have control now and are very excited to show you what marvelous work our local contractors, local donors and volunteers have done to transform our place!” She continued saying, “I like to call the décor “Farmer Chic” which is fitting for highlighting Local Farmers & Local Producers food & wares, but at the same time honoring the Fossa name that ran the store for 3 generations prior to them gifting the building to DRDC in early 2007.” The building housed many businesses in between including Reny’s, Chilton’s, Dexter Print Shop, Penny Pincher and more for short times.
The 1840s building fell in disrepair and DRDC applied for CDBG grants under their non-profit status and used their own monies which helped bring the building back to its former glory.
Craig went on to say about the soft opening, “We will not have all items in place on Thursday, because as you know many veggies planted just are not ready yet, but will be in another month or so. So we are planning a big ole’ Grand Opening in August with all the bells and whistles.” The soft opening will also give the Fossa’s staff time to settle in, get to know all the farmers and their products. The kitchen staff will also have time to master the new wood fired brick oven that is designed for bread & pizza baking, bagels, roasts, homemade beans and lots more. By August, Fossa’s will also be selling Maine wines & beers, accepting SNAP and having even more farmers & producers represented.
Fossa’s will be featuring “Locally Grown, Locally Produced” products and continue their mission of supporting locally agriculture primarily in a 35+ mile radius of Dexter, but for products not available in that area, they will be sourcing other Maine goods. They will also be creating food featuring local produce, fruit, wheat, eggs and dairy in their new certified commercial kitchen.
