BOOTHBAY, Maine — Exuberant, colorful and adaptable, the cottage-garden style is suitable for almost any property. But home gardeners are often puzzled as to how to make and maintain one. In a richly illustrated presentation at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, June 18, Amy Ziffer will share practical advice on everything from planning and design to ongoing care of residential cottage gardens. In this 1-3 p.m. presentation in the Bosarge Family Education Center at the Gardens, she’ll focus on what makes a cottage garden and how to adapt a style we associate with the English gardening tradition to our more challenging climate and environment.

Using her wide-ranging knowledge of woody, perennial and annual plants, Ziffer has been helping clients in western Connecticut achieve beautiful gardens since 1998 and has created many kinds of gardens for sun and shade. Formerly a staff editor for Fine Gardening magazine, she has also worked as a freelance writer and photographer. Her gardening articles and photographs have appeared in Reader’s Digest books and other magazines, including Yankee, Fine Gardening, and Horticulture. She frequently lectures and teaches about garden subjects in New England and the lower Hudson Valley.

The fee for this class, “Creating a New England Cottage Garden: Adapting a Classic Garden Style to the Northeast,” is $35 for members and $42 for nonmembers. To sign up, call 207-633-4333, ext. 101; visit www.MaineGardens.org; or stop by the Gardens, located off Barters Island Road in Boothbay.
