AUGUSTA – Treat yourself to an hour of pure joy. On Wednesday, May 1st, the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine will host the Sprout Film Festival, a program of short films by and about people with developmental disabilities at 11 AM and 6:30 PM at the Michael Klahr Center. The Michael Klahr Center is located on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta.

Presented by Maine’s Spurwink Services, the Sprout Film Festival features a collection of nine short films that are sure to touch, enlighten and delight audiences of all ages. This year’s festival features two Maine-made films:

Showtime was written, produced and directed by Spurwink staff. It stars a 14-year old with autism and a 23-year-old with Asperger’s Syndrome. The film tells the story of Abigail, a young girl with a history of making things up at school. When drawn into a fantastical adventure during a class field trip, Abigail must choose between telling the truth…or honoring a secret.

Thriller is a high energy reimaging of Michael Jackson’s iconic 1984 music video. The multi-media piece was created as part of the Bomb Diggity Arts Program, a community-support program providing innovative and individualized services for adults with intellectual disabilities in Maine since 1996. Bomb Diggity Arts provides programming in the visual arts, culinary arts, multi-media arts and agricultural arts.

The festival also includes other films created in the US, Australia, and Sweden.

The Sprout Film Festival will be held at the Michael Klahr Center, home to the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine, on Wednesday, May 1st at 11 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. Each showing lasts around an hour.

Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, visit hhrc.uma.edu or call 207-621-3530.
