We evolved in a wilderness of parasites and pathogens, but no longer see ourselves as part of nature. We scrub nature off our bodies and try to remove parasites, bacteria, mutualists, and predators, to allow ourselves to live free of wild danger. Dunn reveals that our disconnect has resulted in effects that scientists are only beginning to understand.
