UNITY, Maine — Unity Barn Raisers is thrilled to announce that it is working with Unity’s Inland Family Care practice to “prescribe” gym memberships for at-risk, vulnerable community members. This program, funded in part by Inland Hospital’s Community Benefit Program will allow health care providers at Inland Family Care to write a “prescription” for gym memberships. Recipients of these “prescriptions” are asked to pay $10/month towards their gym memberships, so that they have a personal investment in using their membership to its fullest.
“It takes 21 days to form a habit. We are hoping that by opening up the gym to community members who might not otherwise use it, we are helping to get these folks started in a healthy, lifelong habit, the habit of an active, healthy lifestyle. y providing three months of membership, we hope to get through the coldest months, so that the participants will be able to move out of doors for excercise” explained Amanda Jamison, Interim Executive Director of Unity Barn Raisers.
“As medicine moves towards health promotion and prevention and away from waiting for people to get sick and then responding with treatment, I am excited to have this as an extra option for the patients in my practice. We will be offering this program to patients who are motivated to add a healthy lifestyle to the treatment of their current illnesses and as a way to prevent future illness,” was how Dr. Gavin Ducker of Inland Family Care explained his excitement about this partnership.
The Community Gym and Fitness Center, operated by Unity Barn Raisers out of the Unity Community Center, 32 School St. in Unity, provides local access to both cardio and weight machines as well as free weights. The facility is open for use from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
