Newbery Award-winning author Richard Peck is on MDI for three days of free fun events, June 22 through June 24, courtesy of MDI-based Island Readers and Writers (IRW), www.islandreadersandwriters.org.

Mr. Peck is a novelist who has written more than 35 books for young readers and teens. Among his many awards and honors, he received the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association for his cumulative contribution to young adult literature.

It all starts Sunday, June 22 at 4p.m. at the Mount Desert Island High School’s Higgins-Demas Theatre when readers and writers of all ages gather to meet this master storyteller, humorist and historian as he shares his love of books (reading and writing them!) and tells the tale behind his own novel “A Long Way from Chicago.” There will be a special guest to get things started, a dramatic reading, and a multimedia presentation to transport everyone back in time.

Free copies of “A Long Way From Chicago” are available free to all courtesy of IRW at all MDI-area libraries.

At 5 p.m. there will be a book signing in the high school cafeteria, with copies of many of Mr. Peck’s books available for purchase courtesy of Sherman’s.

On Monday, June 23, Mr. Peck will start at the Northeast Harbor Library, then head to the Bass Harbor Library and finish up at the Southwest Harbor Library.

In Northeast Harbor, he’ll launch the Richard Peck Triple Play Challenge for kids in 4th, 5th and 6th grades or the home-school equivalent, featuring his books “Secrets at Sea,” “The River Between Us” and “The Teacher’s Funeral.” Peck-Tickets for the Challenge are available at the libraries in Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor and Somesville.

In Bass Harbor, it’ll be “An Afternoon Down Yonder” with Mr. Peck from 4 to 5 p.m. featuring his Newbery Medal book “A Year Down Yonder.” He’ll explore the importance of creating a sense of place in stories and how best to do that.

He ends the day in Southwest Harbor with “Eeek! Mouse Mania!” when he reveals the secrets to creating convincing non-human characters and he’ll talk about his books “Secrets at Sea” and “The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail.” Students’ mouse-related artwork will be on display as well.

On Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Peck heads to Swan’s Island and then to Bar Harbor.

From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. he’ll be a the Swan’s Island Library for a fun program called “A Long Way from the Outhouse.” There will a performance of the play “Effigy in the Outhouse” courtesy of students and the Hockamock Players; and Mr. Peck will talk about his life and the craft of writing.

He finishes his visit to MDI with an evening at the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor where he’ll explore the differences and challenges between writing for kids and writing for adults. He’ll talk about setting the right tone and voice for a book, and feature his novel for teens “Are You in the House Alone?”
