BREWER, Maine — The fifth annual Eastern Maine Medical Center Champion the Cure Challenge will take place Saturday, Aug. 16, at EMMC Cancer Care, located at Lafayette Family Cancer Center on 33 Whiting Hill Road in Brewer.
More than 3,000 participants and volunteers are expected at the event, which features a 1K family fun walk, 5K and 10K walk/run, 25, 50, and 100-mile bicycle ride. A cancer survivor celebration will begin at 3 pm. A 50-mile motorcycle ride will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15.
The recipients of the EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge awards will be honored at the event. EMMC physician, Susan O’Connor, MD, has been named honorary chair for continued dedication to cancer patients. Judy Collier of Hampden will receive the Terry Fox Award for her tireless volunteer efforts to support local cancer patients. Lanham, Blackwell & Baber Attorneys of Bangor will receive the Champion Award for continued support as a lead corporate sponsor. Hospitality students from Husson University will receive the Community Champion Award. Since 2011, the students have donated their time and talents by cooking and serving dinner at the pre-race pasta party. The Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented to Carole Piasecki of Lafayette Hotels. Carole has been instrumental in the event since it began, serving on the leadership committee and in numerous volunteer roles.
To date, EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge has raised more than $1 million to benefit cancer research at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
