Emergency weight limit posed on Canal Bridge on Route 4A

BUXTON and HOLLIS, Maine — As a result of an analysis of the Canal Bridge that connects the towns of Hollis and Buxton on Route 4A, Maine Department of Transportation is posting the bridge at a 10-ton limit immediately.

The late spring inspection and recent analysis revealed that the bridge’s gusset plates, which are the flat plates connecting the main truss members, had deteriorated to the point that they are unable to carry all legal loads.

Mitigating repair options will begin immediately. It is too early to predict what and when these options will be put in place.

Variable message boards will alert drivers by 4 p.m. with more permanent signage shortly following.
