Castine, Maine, March 2, 2015- Castine Selectmen and Michael Rossney and Michele Levesque, owners of EL EL FRIJOLES, Mexican Food in Sargentville, on Friday signed a 3 year ground lease for a Town-owned space on the Castine waterfront. The lease was awarded following a public request for proposals by the Castine board of Selectman that took place throughout December of 2014. Mr. Rossney and Ms. Levesque plan to open a traditional, Down-East Take-Out restaurant, named Dudley’s Refresher, at the end of May.
“During the selection process, it became very obvious that Michael (Rossney) and Michele’s (Levesque) most important product was customer service”, observed town manager Jimmy Goodson. Mr. Rossney and Ms. Levesque’s Sargentville –based taqueria, El El Frijoles, serves award-winning cuisine made from fresh local ingredients. Some of their offerings, such as Mission-style burritos and fresh salsas, have been available at the Castine Farmer’s Market for several summers. Long-time EL EL FRIJOLES Sous Chef Kara vanEmmerik will be the chef de cuisine at the new location.
Dudley’s Refresher is named for Dudley Saltonstall, the American Navy Captain who led the 1779 Penobscot Expedition, which ended in complete disaster due to “poor planning, inadequate training and timid leadership”. The restaurant will be serving the traditional fried clams, lobster rolls and burgers along with fries and ice cream. But, says Mr. Rossney, “we’re going to elevate that style to El El Frijoles standards, steering away from the lowest common denominator food that’s sometimes found at snack bars and instead use the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients that we can find.”
For the foodies, be on the lookout for some fusion offerings along the way like beer battered fish (haddock) tacos and Bagaduce oysters on the half shell from Little Island Oyster Co. in Sedgwick. Ice cream, from Ellsworth’s Morton’s Moo, will be sold by the cone or the cup, and there will be daily specials available as well. Dudley’s Refresher will open on Memorial Day weekend at the Castine Town Dock. Plan to stand in line a while!
