Posted April 02, 2013, at 11:33 a.m.

Well-known specialist in Canadian history and women’s history, Dr. Béatrice Craig, will present at the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the Fox Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.

Dr. Craig will speak on her book, “The Land In Between: The Upper Saint John Valley, Prehistory to World War I.” She will share her experiences of researching the first book of history about the St. John Valley since Reverend Thomas Albert’s History of Madawaska published in 1920.

“The Land In Between” is based on the history of the Madawaska Territory, the land that stretches above Grand Falls on both sides of the Saint John River, up to the Témiscouata region of the province of Québec. It is designed to serve as a reference for teachers, librarians, archivists, and historians. It includes documents, many translated from the original, maps, and an extensive bibliography.

The text was written jointly with Max Dagenais and in collaboration with Lisa Ornstein and Guy Dubay in 2009. Ornstein and Dubay also will share their experiences and methods of research at the April 18 presentation.

Dr. Craig earned a Ph.D. in Canadian-American history from the University of Maine in 1983. Currently, she is a full professor of History at the University of Ottawa in Canada.

Craig also authored of “Homespun Capitalists and Backwoods Consumers,” as well as numerous articles on the history of the Upper Saint John Valley. In 2010, she was honored with a Clio Prize from the Canadian Historical Association for the best book in the history of the Atlantic region.

Ms. Craig’s presentation is made possible through a Libra Scholarship Foundation Grant.

The evening’s presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Lise Pelletier, Acadian Archives acadiennes director, at 834-7536.
