Every once in a while we have an opportunity to make a difference. There are many organizations throughout the state of Maine that need financial support; but there is something about getting involved in a local project that affects our culture and vibrancy as a region; something in which we, our children, and grandchildren can enjoy and participate. This is one of those opportunities.
Center Theatre, located in Dover-Foxcroft, is a non-profit organization which provides the people of Piscataquis County a platform to grow in their gifts. Here, artists display their work and enjoy endless opportunities to collaborate with other artists in the region. Actors and actresses throughout Maine come to C.T. to audition for plays performed here throughout the year. Musicians and recording artists come from far and wide to perform. This summer we have seen Greg Brown and Kathy Mattea in concert (a sold-out show!), with the Gibson Brothers coming on Aug 22nd. Major motion pictures are shown here, classics and new releases. Other functions are also held at C.T.,such as one-act play competitions for the local high schools and other student-led performances. Recently the Theatre began “Drawing from Life” sessions with instruction by local talented artist Lydia Rose; here artists come together to draw from a live model using different mediums. Local craft/arts supply store Hobby House of Dover-Foxcroft is sponsoring the sessions. The Theatre invests continually in young people who are interested in the arts. This summer, Center Theatre offered two summer drama-camp sessions, teaching children everything about theater – from staging, blocking, props, lighting, acting and more. Each camp runs two weeks and ends in a live performance so that parents can enjoy all their children have learned during the session.
Truly, this is a special place. Volunteers from the community are the “heart and soul” of Center Theatre, helping in the box office, with concession sales, with backstage help for plays and concerts, and even building maintenance. Surrounding business owners have donated generously to the Theatre over the years, knowing it is an investment in our county and our future. All those who know and love Center Theatre have recognized the impact our economy has had, and no one ever wants to see a day when the curtain closes for good. There have been close-calls in the past, but benefactors would come forward just in time to “save the day”.
Besides donations (which are always welcome) and ticket sales, the Theatre’s income is derived from annual memberships for individuals and families, which include free movie tickets to select shows, free popcorn, discounts to certain Theatre events, and membership to the Classic Movie Club. Memberships begin at $35 per year, and help to offset operating expenses, but more importantly, fund Center Theatre’s programs and scholarships. Common needs at the Theatre include costume pieces and props, construction materials for sets, electronics and office supplies.
On Saturday, August 16th, there will be a “Fundraising Gala” for the Center Theatre at the Cabot House, 866 Main St. in Dover Foxcroft. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in investing in the performing arts to purchase a ticket; every ticket sold will make a significant difference in where the Theatre goes from here.
The gala will feature a live and silent auction, music, riverboat rides, ice cream, and an open bar. Also, those who attend will have a wonderful opportunity to view the art of local and nationally acclaimed artists and craftspeople, such as Alan Bray, Philip Gladstone, Jerry Stelmok, Wally Warren, John Tatko, Paul Stiffler, Allen Monroe, Dave Lockwood, Jemma Gascoine, and Lydia Rose. The event will run from 3-6pm. Tickets are only $50, and include ice cream, hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. To RSVP, please contact Angela at 564-8943 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All thriving communities have a vibrant arts & culture movement, and Dover Foxcroft is moving purposefully in that direction. We hope you will help us!
