PORTLAND, Maine – Two members of the Deering High School Debate Team won awards at the Maine Forensic Association’s speech and debate tournament held Jan. 25, at Brunswick High School.

Jenny Chien, a Deering senior, was the state champion in the novice division of the Lincoln-Douglas debate competition.

Zaeda Hills, a Deering freshman, came in second place in that contest.

They debated the resolution: “In developing countries, environmental protection should be prioritized over resource extraction when the two are in conflict.”
