Darling’s Ford, a long time sponsor of the Komen Maine Race for the Cure in Bangor, took their sponsorship a few steps further once again. They had the largest corporate team for the Race, generously offering to pay half the registration fee for their employees to participate. At the Race for the Cure event in September, Darling’s also brought their fun photo booth and ice cream truck to add to the festivities. In addition, Darling’s ran a promotion in September where $100 from the sale of each vehicle sold during a period of time would benefit the Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure through their Race team.
A check for $12,000 was presented to the Komen Maine Affiliate’s Executive Director, Sally Bilancia, during Darling’s annual Women & Wheels event on Oct 10th. “We are incredibly grateful to Darling’s for going above and beyond their sponsorship each year,” said Ms. Bilancia. “To them, it isn’t just about writing a check, it’s about helping the cause.” Kim White, a Darling’s employee and breast cancer survivor, has joined the Race Committee and will serve as the 2013 Race Co-Chair along with Rosa Caristi. Carrie Meo, Vice President of Fixed Operations at Darling’s, serves on the Komen Maine Board of Directors.
The first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® took place in Dallas, Texas, in 1983 with 800 participants. Today, the Komen Race for the Cure® series is the largest 5K series in the world with more than 120 races and more than 1 million participants expected this year. The Susan G. Komen Maine Affiliate hosts two races annually — one in Bangor, which has been held since 1997 and one in Portland, which just completed its third year.
Due to the annual success of the Bangor race and growing support for the Portland race, the Komen Maine Affiliate has invested nearly $2.6 million for education, screening and treatment programs and over $750,000 for breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise: to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
