WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Mike Michaud has announced that he has hired Dan Rafter to serve as his new communications director.

Rafter, who started in Michaud’s office Monday, replaces Ed Gilman, who has joined the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Rafter joins Michaud’s office from the Human Rights Campaign, where he served as associate director of communications.

“Dan’s strategic communications experience and his commitment to effecting positive change make him a natural fit for our office,” said Michaud in a press release. “As we continue working on behalf of the people of Maine, I’m confident that Dan’s skills and passion will be a valuable asset for us.”

Rafter joins other recent hire Jane Calderwood in Michaud’s office. Calderwood, who serves as legislative director and previously worked for Sen. Olympia Snowe, replaces Nora Todd. Calderwood started in February.

Rafter previously served as associate director of communications at the Human Rights Campaign. He managed communications for a variety of HRC’s campaigns, including the 2013 marriage equality cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and efforts to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. He also worked on campaigns to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and to re-authorize the Violence Against Women Act.

Prior to joining HRC, Rafter worked at the National Quality Forum, where he managed communications efforts related to healthcare reform and quality improvement. Dan has worked in advocacy communications on a number of other issues, including government transparency, education reform and the environment.

He also worked as a reporter at NPR-affiliate WFUV News in New York, covering both city and regional politics. In 2007, his work won him recognition from the New York State AP Broadcasters Association.

Rafter graduated from Fordham University with bachelor’s degrees in political science and history.
