ROCKPORT, Maine —A contra dance and dinner on March 16 will raise funds for the Rig, a grassroots organization providing safe space, connections, and programs for teens in Camden.

Happening at the Rockport Opera House, the event features the nationally-known 2-person band Perpetual e-Motion. One of the best-loved and innovative contra bands in the country, Perpetual e-Motion integrates technical and sonic innovations with traditional contra music traditions to create a enormous sound full of momentum and groove. The dance will be called by Will Mentor, arguably one of the best callers in contemporary contra.

A taco bar generously provided by Café Miranda starts at 6 p.m, along with an introductory contra workshop with Perpetual e-Motion and Will Mentor. The dance starts at 7 and runs until 10 p.m.

A $1,000 raffle prize package includes a year’s worth of health and wellness gift certificates donated by local practitioners.

All are welcome, including beginners. Tickets are $25 for the taco bar, intro workshop, and dance; and $15 for the dance only. Raffle tickets are $5 each or $20 for five. All proceeds benefit the Rig.

The event marks the third “birthday benefit bash” for Camden resident Shannon Thompson. In past years, Thompson has organized dance parties to raise funds for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti (in 2009), and to offset major medical expenses for a friend (in 2010.) Enthusiastic crowds raised over $3000 each year. This year’s event is generously sponsored by Thrive Wellness (www.thriveonwellness.com), with additional support from Café Miranda, Lord Camden Inn, and Hannaford.

Ticket sales are limited due to opera house regulations, and advance purchase is highly recommended. For more information and tickets, visit www.birthdaybenefit.org. Tickets are also available at HAV II and Zoot Coffe in Camden, or Rock City in Rockland.
