GROUND BREAKING IN ARIEMET

At long last, the Ariemet Girl’s Rescue Center will be a reality! The NGO, Expanding Opportunities in collaboration with POWER, a local CBO, was awarded a grant from the United Nations Slavery Fund to build STAGE ONE of the rescue center. FGM (female genital mutilation), EFM (early forced marriage), and withheld education is still practiced in many areas of Kenya. Expanding Opportunities began working with Josephine Kulea, a human rights activist, to assist the girl child to obtain an education; to eradicate the female “cut” and stop early forced marriage. The community of Ariemet dedicated land for the construction of a Rescue Center.

Isiolo is home to several traditional pastoralist tribes. Though FGM, EFM and withholding education from the girl child are against the laws of Kenya, these tribes persist, either through lack of knowledge or tenacious adherence to tradition, with these practices which deny the girl child choice and education. Using a three pronged approach of community education, girl child rescue and support in education, POWER hopes to impact the live of pastoralist girls to provide hope for the future.

Sunday September 29, 2012, Councilor Paul Mero; CBO POWER Chairperson, Josephine Kulea; Director of Expanding Opportunities, Beverly Stone, along with several members of the community were at the site in Ariemet to break ground for the center.
