BRUNSWICK, Maine — Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc., this region’s local workforce investment board, held its 12th annual meeting on May 15, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport.
Charlie Crosby, president of the Board for CCWI and a Sagadahoc County Commissioner,
welcomed board members and guests. Commissioner Crosby remarked in a press release, “This is a very special event for us all. It is always special when the County Commissioners, the Workforce Board, State partners, our Regional Employers, Education Providers, CareerCenter and Goodwill Workforce Solutions staff, customers, and our many other partners come together for an evening of celebration and recognition.”
Special guests included Travis Kennedy of Sen. Angus King’s Office; Richard Freund, Deputy Commissioner of Maine Department of Labor; Richard Cantz of
Goodwill Industries of Northern New England; Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership President Muriel Mosher; Vice President Janet Sortor from Southern Maine Community College; Ethan Strimling, CEO of LearningWorks; Jeff Kobrock of Midcoast Council of Governments; and Mark Ouellette from Mobilize Maine.
Robert Schmidt of LL Bean, Coastal Counties Workforce Board’s Chair, spoke to upcoming federal workforce legislation that will have a direct effect on workforce development programs, and he provided a summary of major CCWI regional accomplishments for the past year including:
- Met or exceeded all Workforce Investment Act (WIA) National Performance Standards.
- Received a $1.3 million discretionary (H1-B) grant entitled “The Make it In America Challenge,” which is an employer-driven partnership effort.
- Completed a robust strategic plan which for the first time aligns with the regional Economic Development Districts’ CEDs plans.
- The placement of more than 200 unemployed workers in STEM-related On-the-Job Training directly resulting in private sector employment.
A Participant of the Year Award was presented to Courtney Berry, who is pursuing the field of nursing. Ms. Berry explained that she was thrilled with her work and thanked both CCWI and Goodwill Workforce Solutions for the training program. Additionally, an Employer of the Year Award was presented to Kent Peterson, President & CEO of Fluid Imaging Technologies, and Robert Chatfield, CFO of Fluid Imaging Technologies. Mr. Peterson remarked in a press release, “We are honored that CCWI has recognized Fluid Imaging Technologies as the ‘Employer of the Year.’ Both CCWI and Goodwill offer services that have been extremely beneficial for our company and the state of Maine. We appreciate their assistance in helping us build the strong workforce we have today.”
Finally, The Outstanding Service Award was given to Chris Dube who, although currently
retired, spent the past 13 years working at CCWI as Executive Assistant. In presenting the award, Executive Director Michael Bourret summed up her tireless contribution by stating that “Chris is simply a gem.”
The evening ended with entertainment provided by Randy Judkins who, in his own unique way, helped attendees appreciate a sense of humor in their lives.
Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc. is a non-profit entity responsible for administrative
oversight of the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) in the six counties of Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Cumberland, and York. CCWI acts as the fiduciary agent for the counties and provides the commissioners and the workforce board with administrative and management services as they pertain to WIA and regional workforce development.
