I have decided to run for the Office of Sheriff for Penobscot County. It is with great pleasure that I make this announcement after careful deliberation with family, friends, law enforcement professionals and community members.

I have been extremely proud to work with, or in, all aspects of the criminal justice system over the past 25 years and look forward to many more. I have spent time with legislators addressing laws impacting the criminal justice system and have served in law enforcement both as a rural patrol deputy and investigator. I’ve worked in the court system and in many areas within the corrections division. As a result of my work experience, advanced training, education and dedication, I was promoted through the ranks culminating in supervisory and management positions. Having a working knowledge of each part of the criminal justice system is crucial to the success of any sheriff.

Today, society is faced with many social issues, several of which have direct impacts on the criminal justice system. Substance abuse, mental illness, family violence and early childhood education are areas the criminal justice system cannot ignore when responding to these issues. A successful criminal justice system includes comprehensive partnerships with community members, the business community, schools, and government officials. My extensive experience working with more than 65 communities throughout the county will demonstrate to be valuable when addressing social issues confronting our communities.

The Office of Sheriff represents one of the purest forms of democracy, directly answering to the citizens of their counties. As sheriff, I will continue my true dedication to the citizens of Penobscot County. I have spent the past 25 years dedicated to this mission and look forward to serving as your sheriff.

I want to thank my family, friends, law enforcement professionals and community members for the overwhelming support I have received during my career. I look forward to this continuous support as I work toward becoming your next sheriff. The committee to elect Troy Morton for Sheriff is actively working on our campaign and will have resource, informational material and sites available within the coming days.

Respectfully

Troy Morton
