The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce, Presque Isle Elks Lodge, Presque Isle Kiwanis and Presque Isle Rotary clubs are pleased to announce their selection for recipients of the Citizen of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Business of the Year Awards which will be presented at the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner, January 23, 2014.
The selection committee poured over the numerous nominations received trying to select just one honoree for each category. We are fortunate in this area to have so many people and businesses who willingly share their talents and time with the community to improve the lives of their neighbors.
Citizen of the Year award goes to Paul and Dr. Norma Desjardins in recognition of their dedication to dental health of children in Aroostook County and beyond. The St. Apollonia Dental Clinic is a non-profit organization which seeks to aid those most in need of dental services; particularly, the children and adolescents of Aroostook County who have no access to dental care. The primary goal will be to provide a dental home which consists of ongoing quality dental preventive and restorative services and to educate patients and their parents, guardians, or caregivers on continued dental care. The clinic seeks to reach out to the most vulnerable, dentally needy population of Aroostook County. The Desjardins have seen this clinic expand since it first opened, recently adding the services of a pediatric dentist, Dr. Erik Johnson. The Desjardins dedicate time and financial resources to the success and growth of this clinic, thus improving the lives of children and parents in Central Aroostook County and beyond.
Virginia R. Joles was chosen to receive the 2013 Lifetime Achievement award. Ginny is well known throughout the area for the many years of service she has provided to residents of central Aroostook and beyond. Ginny’s list of accomplishments and contributions is too long to include here but include Rotary International, Aspirations of Aroostook, United Way of Aroostook, Junior Achievement, Wintergreen Arts Center, Aroostook House of Comfort, Patriot Guard Riders, Maine Winter Sports Center and Leaders Encouraging Aroostook Development.
McCain Food USA was named Business of the Year for 2013 in recognition of their many contributions to and support of area events and organizations plus their investment in the facility in Easton, ME.
