ROUND POND VILLAGE, Maine — Castlebay Folksongs Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the historic Little Brown Church on Route 32 in Round Pond Village.
Castlebay treats an audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic as they interweave ancient ballads, spritely dance tunes, and haunting aires inspired by the rich Celtic heritage of New England. Exuberant vocals are supported with Julia Lane’s award-winning Celtic harp style, and Fred Gosbee’s expertise on 12-string guitar, fiddle and woodwinds. Critics have said “Their harmony, excellent musicianship, and enthusiasm for the songs they sing make for a wonderful evening”. Both Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved, sung and researched folk music since childhood. They have been recently exploring the traditional music connections between the Celtic lands, the Canadian Maritimes and Maine. These regions share in the richness of this heritage as revealed by the many variations of songs tunes and stories carried by families moving through the area by land and sea. In addition to songs passed down in their own families, Lane and Gosbee research archives and collections and interpret this music through the lens of their own cultural legacy. As a result, the duo blends history, legend and experience into their personable performance style.
Castlebay has produced more than 24 recordings which feature both songs of the Maine coast as well as songs, stories and poems in the Scottish and Irish tradition. Their most recent CD is a collection of songs from and about Maine history titled John Earthy’s Tavern.
Frequently touring down the U.S. East Coast and to Ireland, Scotland and England, Castlebay performs at arts centers, museums, festivals and schools. They often will present concerts highlighting a specific theme with songs and stories from their wealth of history and lore, and have created several multi-media productions based on their research.
Admission to the concert is $10 for adults; Children are free. For more information, please visit www.castlebay.net, firstname.lastname@example.org or call 207-529-5438.
