Camden, Maine will hold its first Cash Mob on Monday August 20th at 4:30PM in the Village Green. Participants will learn at that time which store is being “mobbed” and then proceed to shop at that business. Buttons have been designed and will be distributed to those who attend. The participating businesses will offer special incentives to those “Mobbers” wearing these buttons.

Camden Development Director, Brian Hodges, first created the Facebook page for Cash Mob Camden on Friday July 27th and within 2 weeks, over 200 Likes have been acquired. “I’m so pleased with the level of support and enthusiasm being shown for this. Cash mobs have been successfully held in other parts of Maine, and around the world, so it seemed like a natural fit for Camden to start one in this region of midcoast Maine.”

Cash mob is a new trend in which people use social media to plan organized events, providing a way to join together and support local businesses. The term “cash mob” comes from the same concept of a “flash mob.” Just as flash mobs call together a group of people to meet for a short period of time, so do cash mobs. Cash mobs are shown to be an effective tool for the “think local – shop local – buy local” movement. The basic principles of a cash mob are for supporters to gather in a common location with $20 each and commit to spending it at the selected store. After shopping, the participants will typically gather at a separate location to socialize.

Christopher Smith organized the first Cash Mob in Buffalo, NY on August 5, 2011. Since then, cash mobs have become a phenomenon and have even started in other countries such as Canada and Australia.

“Not only is Cash Mob Camden a great business development opportunity, it really supports community development by showcasing and bolstering the spirit here in Camden,” added Hodges. While the selected business will not be announced until the day of the cash mob, Hodges is confident the shoppers will be very pleased with the location.

The after party location has been selected and announced. Fromviandoux will welcome “Mobbers” wearing the specially designed buttons. A special drink is being designed, the Fromviandoux Flash, for this event and will be offered to “Mobbers” at a special price.
