Bangor Art Society’s 34rd Annual Open Juried Show
Saturday May 3rd – May 28th, 2014. Bangor Public Library, Harlow St. 207.947.8336.
(In-take 10 am-12 noon; pick-up declined art, 2:30-3:30 pm, May 3rd. Take-down at Tuesday May 27th BAS meeting, 6 to 8 pm and on Saturday May 31st 10-11am; any left over art pieces will be stored in lecture hall closet to the right of the stage. Ask library janitor to help retrieve art.)
Criteria and Guidelines: Open to all artists 18 years+ living in Maine, including part-time residents and college students. All entries must be original in concept and design and created entirely by the submitting artist within the last two years, and cannot have been entered in a previous BAS open juried show. Prints must be hand pulled. All media of fine art is accepted.
5 Categories: Oil & Acrylic; Watercolor and other Water Media; Pastel; Photography; Other Media (including but not limited to Mixed Media, Fiber, Graphite, Glass, Ceramic).
James Linehan, Professor of Art and Department Chair at the University of Maine at Orono, is a painter who teaches courses in painting, drawing and design. After receiving a B.F.A. in Painting at Arizona State University in 1974, he continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned an M.A. in painting in 1976 and an M.F.A. in 1978. Prior to moving to Maine in 1983 he taught for five years at St. Andrews College in North Carolina.
Linehan is represented by Aucocisco Gallery in Portland, Maine; Gallery 357 in Rockland, Maine; Vose Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts; and Sherry French Gallery, New York, N.Y. His work has been included in over one hundred group shows and twenty solo shows in the past fifteen years. He has completed twenty public commissions, including fifteen for the Maine Arts Commission Percent For Art Project, and is represented in thirty public and corporate collections. Suzette McAvoy has served as director and curator of CMCA since September 2010. She previously served as chief curator of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, and has more than 30 years experience in the art field. She has lectured and written extensively on the art and artists of Maine, and has organized national traveling exhibitions of the work of Louise Nevelson, Alex Katz, Kenneth Noland, Lois Dodd, Karl Schrag, and Alan Magee.
Prior to moving to Maine in 1988, she was the director of the University of Rhode Island Art Galleries. She has also worked at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, and the Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution.
Ms. McAvoy received a B.A. in art history from William Smith College and an M.A. in museum studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. She lives in Belfast, Maine. [From the CMCA website]

Awards: Best in Show: $300. In each category: 1st place–$200, 2nd–$100, 3rd–$75. (If you would like to endow a prize in your name, please talk to Jim, Mike, or Ulrike)
Entry and Specifications: With the exception noted below, all work must be suitably framed and wired for hanging at the time of submission (no saw tooth hangers). Work will not be accepted if mat or frame is poorly made, damaged, or soiled. Gallery-wrapped canvases on heavy-duty stretcher frame with neatly painted edges need not be framed but must be wired for hanging. All work except oils & acrylics must be under glass or protected by acrylic glazing. Width including frame may not exceed 50”, and height may not exceed 60”. Attach a 3 x 5” card to the back of each piece of work submitted with the following information: title, medium, name & address & phone and email of artist, category you wish to enter, price, or “NFS” if not for sale.
Registration: $25 non-refundable jury fee allows each artist to submit 2 entries.
Please complete registration form [below], enclose check to Bangor Art Society, and mail to arrive by Thursday 1st May to: P.O. Box 2411, Bangor ME 04402-2411 or bring to the Art Society meeting on Tuesday 22nd April, 6 to 8pm at Bangor Public Library.
Entries after this, including at the door on Saturday May 3rd, cost $30.
Delivery of Entries: Bring your entries to the Bangor Public Library top floor Lecture Hall on Saturday, May 3rd, between 10am-12 noon. (Library opens at 10am. Free parking available opposite library on Harlow Street at Abbott Square parking lot.) Work declined for the exhibit must be picked up between 2:30 and 3:30 pm the same day. Declined work will not be stored. Friends may pick up work on behalf of artist with written permission from artist. Work selected for the exhibit must hang until Tuesday May 27th (preferably till the end of the 6-8 pm BAS meeting that day). All work not picked up then or on Saturday May 31st, 10-11am will be stored in the lecture hall closet. See a library janitor to retrieve such work.
Liability: The Bangor Public Library and the Bangor Art Society assume no responsibility for any damage or loss of property during the show. Permission to photograph accepted artwork for publicity is assumed.
Opening Reception: at the Bangor Public Library lecture hall on Tuesday, May 13th from 6-7 pm with the awards presentation at 6:30 pm. Bring family and friends! Refreshment contributions gratefully received (no alcohol).
