Brewer Scouts tour rail shops

MILO, Maine -- Boy Scouts from Brewer’s Troop 1 recently toured the Derby Shops of the Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway in Milo as part of their work in achieving the railroading merit badge.

The boys viewed a number of areas of work performed by employees there including locomotive and railcar repair, and inspection and rebuilding of locomotives for their own railroad, and other rail lines. The Scouts also learned more about the railroad which operates in Maine, Quebec and Vermont.

The trip to the Derby Shops was just one part of earning their merit badge. Under the guidance of merit badge counselor Fred Hirsch, they also researched other rail lines, learned about safety around rails, describeed different types of railcars, and identified the numerous types of jobs to run a railroad.
