The Eastport Arts Center will host a Body Weather Workshop taught by Asher Woodworth on Tuesday, August 19th at 1pm. This movement workshop will introduce participants to the practice of Body Weather training. Body Weather is a comprehensive (non)technique developed by Min Tanaka at Body Weather Farm in Hakushu, Japan in the mid-eighties. It originally served as a daily training regimen for Tanaka and his dancers. In Body Weather, bodies are not conceived as fixed and separate entities but are – like the weather – constantly changing through infinite complex processes occurring inside and around them. Workshop tuition is $5-10 sliding scale. Registration is recommended: call 853-4650 or email email@example.com to register.
We will use this introductory workshop as a laboratory for collecting new sensory information, as well as an opportunity to disorient ourselves, and move big. Part aerobic workout routine, part hopscotch dance party, focus will be on coordination, motion, and whole body perception. Time permitting, the class will culminate in a number of focused improvisational performance exercises intended to give you more tools to work with as dancers and/or simply human beings moving through the everyday world. This will be fun, and it will be challenging. All over the age of 12 are very much welcome, no experience necessary. This is nothing like ballet.
Asher Woodworth has a background in postmodern choreography, performance, and video. He works primarily with bodies and concepts, but also spirits, plants and machines. A graduate of Bennington College, Asher is very influenced by the life and work of Min Tanaka, whom he studied intensively with in Japan in 2008. He is currently developing a new work with choreographer Dean Moss, which will premiere at The Kitchen in New York City in October 2014. He has also collaborated recently with Deborah Hay and Hana van der Kolk. Asher lives in Eastport, Maine.
