BATH, Maine — Bath native and West Bath resident William E. “Bill” Haggett has been selected by the Maine Maritime Museum to receive the 2014 Mariners Award, presented annually to an individual or organization that has made extraordinary contributions to Maine’s maritime heritage and significantly impacted the state’s culture and economy.
U.S. Senator Susan Collins is scheduled to give a keynote address at a dinner event on August 28 during which Haggett will be honored. The dinner will be a held in the historic Percy & Small Shipyard at the museum.
A Morse High School and Colby College graduate, Haggett has been a leader in maritime industry, education and culture for much of his adult life. He was an executive at Bath Iron Works for 28 years, where his father had been a pipefitter. He worked his way up to become chief operating officer, then president and chief executive officer, a position he held for eight years. While at BIW, Haggett served a term as president of the Shipbuilders Council of America. Following his career at BIW, he served five years as president and CEO of Irving Shipbuilding Ltd., in New Brunswick, Canada. He is currently chairman and CEO of Pineland Farms Natural Meats and Pineland Farms Naturally Potatoes U.S.
Community involvement has been a fundamental part of Haggett’s life and among the numerous and far reaching service roles he has shouldered many have had a maritime connection. He joined the Maine Maritime Museum board of trustees in 1987, served as its chair from 2008 to 2010 and was named trustee emeritus in 2012. He is also a trustee emeritus of the Maine Maritime Academy board of trustees, joining the board in 1989 and serving as its chair from 1999 to 2005. He is one of only six honorary members of the Academy’s Alumni Association to have been invited to join by unanimous vote.
