TITLE: BAR HARBOR BANK & TRUST MAKES ‘COMMUNITY COMMITMENT’ DONATION
Ellsworth, Maine – Each week, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust directors and employees, in exchange for being able to dress casually on Fridays, voluntarily contribute to a charitable fund that disburses gifts monthly to local non-profit organizations. This employee-driven donation program is called Community Commitment. The Bank matches the employee donations, doubling the amount given to the chosen non-profit organization. Each month employees at a different bank location get to choose the recipient of these contributions.
For the month of October, employees at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust’s 135 High Street office chose the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and the Emmaus Homeless Shelter to receive the Community Commitment funds.
“This donation from Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is excellent. We can really use the money during this tough time of year,” said Jim Tintle, Co-Manager of the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry. The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is a non-profit organization located at 119 Bucksport Road in Ellsworth and is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. They provide food to approximately 240 families per month. Families in need should call ahead for an appointment (667-4363), although no one in need is turned away.
Monetary gifts received by Loaves and Fishes, like this one from Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, go a long way in buying bulk food at reduced prices, and paying overhead expenses such as heat and maintenance for the building. “We are very appreciative of the contributions we receive from the local grocery stores, and we also benefit from the Hancock County food drive held in March,” said Jim. But, it is donations from individuals and businesses that are the backbone of their funding. Currently the Food Pantry needs soup, oatmeal, peanut butter, tuna and canned fruit. Monetary donations can be mailed to Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, P.O. Box 55, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
Sr. Lucille MacDonald, Director at Emmaus said, “The money from Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is coming at a perfect time. Currently we have 153 families signed up for Christmas, but only 90 have been adopted. These funds will help fill the gap.” In the coming weeks, Emmaus expects to have 250 families in total looking for holiday assistance. People who adopt a family provide a food box and gifts for the children. “The shelter is always full to capacity, housing 25 individuals, with people on the waiting list. The average length of stay is a couple months. Our phone rings constantly with people needing help with fuel and/or rent. We have become a community hub where people feel welcome and know that they will be helped,” said Sr. Lucille.
Since 1992 the Emmaus Homeless Shelter has been providing a safe and comfortable environment for homeless men, women and families in need of temporary shelter who are willing to work towards ending their homelessness. Located on the corner of Main and Water Streets in downtown Ellsworth, they are committed to helping the poor in Hancock and Washington Counties by offering a wide range of services and referrals to anyone in need. The Emmaus Homeless Shelter is a 25 bed facility which can accommodate four families, six single women, and five single men, ages 18 and up. The Shelter operates (24) twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year.
During Thanksgiving, the Emmaus Shelter provided 200 food boxes to needy families in the area and hosted a community Thanksgiving dinner. The Shelter is always in need of items including food, cleaning products, paper products, and personal care items. In getting ready for Christmas, they need gravy for dinner! Monetary gifts can be sent to P.O. Box 811, Ellsworth, Maine 04605.
