The Bangor YMCA is teaming up with MARTiAL YOU, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and creating access to martial arts, in order to create a one-of-a-kind Martial Arts Camp for youth ages 7 to 18 years old. This 5-day Martial Arts Camp will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm beginning Monday, August 19, 2013 and will be held at the Bangor YMCA, giving youth the opportunity to experience different styles of martial arts including TaeKwonDo, Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and the disciplines of Yoga; thanks to the volunteers from MARTiAL YOU, Young’s MMA, and Eduardo Benjamin of Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, all local organizations that are passionate about the health and well-being of today’s youth.

The Bangor YMCA Martial Arts Camp was created by the Bangor YMCA and MARTiAL YOU’s Shawn Hill in an effort to introduce youth to the benefits of martial arts. The study and practice of martial arts has the potential to help build confidence in youth, reinforce a sense of respect for others, create more awareness of personal and social responsibility, and increase an individual’s perception of potentially bad situations. With bullying becoming more prominent in today’s news, the Bangor YMCA Martial Arts Camp will give youth an insight into the opportunities martial arts provides and how the practice could help them learn how to deal with potentially harmful situations. A daily leadership workshop is facilitated by the Bangor YMCA’s Youth & Family/Leaders School Director Eric Taylor, LCSW, who will help students reflect upon what they have learned each day of the camp and will attempt to provide some of the tools to help participants become young leaders and role models in the community.

Not only will youth have the opportunity to learn the basics of different martial art styles, but the Bangor YMCA’s Licensed Nutritionist Katie Mroz will also teach youth the importance of healthy eating habits and what foods they will need while training in activities such as martial arts in case they decide to continue on with one of the local martial arts organizations’ or the Bangor YMCA’s martial arts programs.

Registration for the Bangor YMCA Martial Arts Camp is $50 for Members and $80 for Non-Members. Income Based Pricing is available at time of registration at the Bangor YMCA on 17 Second Street, Bangor. Spots are limited and early registration is strongly encouraged!

The Bangor YMCA Martial Arts Camp would not be possible without the collaborative efforts of our volunteer instructors from MARTiAL YOU, Young’s MMA, and Eduardo Benjamin of Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
