“War on Whistleblowers” is an award-winning new documentary by director and producer Robert Greenwald, that demonstrates the dangers of the surveillance state and how whistleblowers have been treated by the US government. Recent revelations by Bradley/Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden and the punishments both have received or been threatened with suggest that there are many government activities that the US public knows nothing about, but should. While many see such whistleblowers as heroes, they have been criticized, persecuted and charged with crimes.
The film tells the stories of four whistleblowers, including employees from private contractors of US arms manufacturing and the federal government. They each describe the difficulty of exposing waste, corruption, and dangerous behavior that their employer was engaging in. The film also hears from other whistleblowers, such as the Pentagon Papers’ Daniel Ellsberg, journalists who have exposed the “dirty laundry” information, and people knowledgeable on issues of government snooping, government watchdogging, taxpayer rights, and national security.
