BANGOR, Maine — Paul Butler, principal at Bangor High School, is proud to announce the French Award winners, as the top four students in the Class of 2013.
Andy Chen, son of Yun Xing and Yan Chen of Bangor, is a member of the National Honors Society. He was a member of the Speech and Debate Team, Math Team, Chess Team, Academic Decathlon, and Tennis Club. He volunteered more than 200 hours of service to the Maine Discovery Museum and works at his family restaurant. He was selected to represent the state of Maine in national competitions for Speech and Debate and for the American Regions Math League. Andy also received several academic awards, including the superintendent’s academic excellence awards as a sophomore and senior, departmental excellence awards in French, and the title of Superior Distinction for the National Forensics League. He will be attending Northeastern University with a business/economics concentration and an interest in political science.
Josh Audibert, son of Steven Audibert and Theresa Pace, is a National Merit Semi-Finalist and a member of the National Honors Society. He played varsity soccer and varsity tennis. He also ran in community charity races and was an active member of the ACTION Youth Ministry, Math Team, and Chess Team. He received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and the Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award. He will study computer engineering at the University of Maine.
Noah Karam, son of Niman and Kimberly Karam, is a member of the National Honors Society. He took on leadership roles as Student Council president and the Editor in Chief of the school newspaper. He also was the varsity basketball team manager and a member of the math team. He received the Sophomore Award of Academic Excellence, Excellence in History Award, Excellence in French Award, George Eastman Young Leaders Award, AP Scholar Award, and Penobscot County Bar Association Law Day Essay Contest Honorable Mention Award. He will study computer science at the University of Maine.
Leah Jones, daughter of Nancy Jacobson and Jeff Jones, is a National Merit Finalist and a member of the National Honors Society. She took on leadership roles as the SEED Environmental Club Vice President and Math Team Captain. She was also a member of Tennis Team, Swim Team, Girl Scouts of America, Civil Rights Team, of Children’s International Summer Village, and Unitarian Universality Society. She has volunteered as a teacher in Central America and in rural Maine. She received the 4 A’s Award, Science Excellence Award, Spanish Excellence Award, Math Excellence Award, the University of Rochester Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award, and the Novack Book Award. She will attend Brown University as a medical student.
