FEET ON THE STREET:
‘BANDS’ ROCKING THE ROADWAYS FOR L-A RACE
LEWISTON – What has nine bands, Girl Power Zumba dancers, a Kids’ Obstacle course, food, fun and more? It is “Bands on the Run,” Lewiston and Auburn’s premier half-marathon event. The festivities take place on June 24, 2012 with hundreds of runners moving to the beat of nine popular bands playing along a 13.1-mile course of combined roads and trails throughout the Lewiston-Auburn area. “It’s a fun run,” said Museum L-A Board Member and experienced runner, Emile Clavet, who recently ran the course with Bands co-director, Mike Lecompte. More than 400 have registered for the day’s events with new participants signing up daily.
Many popular bands have agreed to provide a steady beat for the runners. Bands, such as Veggies By Day, New Wine Band, The Repeat Offenders, The Grumps, Chaple Street Ally, Ron Bergeron, Last Call, Rhythm Junkies Drum & Dance Tribe, and the Brookside Band will rock the roadways for the benefit of runners, cheerleaders and local spectators.
A 5K run in the heart of downtown Lewiston-Auburn is another option for runners, and for children ages 5-12, there is a kid-friendly obstacle course. Volunteers are also welcome to help and join the festivities. Registration is available online at www.bandsontherunhalf.com or by calling 207-333-3881 or 207-210-8655.
Bands runners will all receive a medal, be eligible for prizes, and will find plenty of food on hand, generously donated by Subway, Dunkin’ Donuts, Oakhurst Dairy and others. Revelations Massage is offering free massages to run participants. After race festivities continue at Pedro O’Hara’s, for good fun and more music!
Community members are urged to gather along the courses to enjoy the music and cheer participants, then gather at Simard-Payne Park to continue the fun. Course maps are available on the event’s website.
Proceeds from the Half-Marathon, along with a 5K, and a Kids’ Obstacle Course, will benefit the work and mission of Museum L-A. Since 2004, Museum L-A has become a relevant cultural organization in Androscoggin County and the State of Maine.
Its innovative formulas for creating community connections have been recognized and awarded by such national and prestigious organizations as The American Association for State and Local History and the New England Museum Association. Museum L-A’s vision is to chronicle the history of work, industry and community in the Lewiston and Auburn area as it serves as a community gathering place; creates engaging learning experiences; and contributes to the civic pride, cultural understanding, and economic revitalization for the area.
