Posted March 27, 2013, at 11:43 a.m.

Portland, MAINE, March 27, 2013 — The Avesta HomeOwnership Center will begin its next Homebuyer Education Course on Monday, April 8. The 10-hour course runs for four sessions on April 8, 10, 15 and 17 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Avesta Housing’s headquarters at 307 Cumberland Avenue in Portland.

The course is designed to assist people in all stages of the home-buying process: renters who want to determine if home-buying is right for them, first-time homebuyers who need to learn more about the process, and current owners who are refinancing their homes. The HomeOwnership Center has held several classes and response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with one recent graduate saying, “This was the best $15 I ever spent.”

Taught by certified housing counselors and industry professionals, the course covers every aspect of the home-buying process, including:

Money management

Shopping for a home

Qualifying and obtaining a mortgage loan

Lender’s view: Determining creditworthiness and affordability

What to expect at closing

Sustaining your gain: Life as a homeowner

Registration is required, and the cost is $15. Visit www.avestahousing.org/home-ownership-center for more information and to register.

Established in June 2012, the Avesta HomeOwnership Center serves as a one-stop shop for low- and moderate-income families looking to buy their first home, improve the home they own or avoid foreclosure.
