ELLSWORTH/BAR HARBOR, April 15 — Local children and adults with autism, their family members and caregivers from Downeast Horizons, plus anyone (including reporters) who wishes to join will participate in their annual Autism Awareness Walk-a-thon in Bar Harbor on Tuesday morning. The 1.5-mile Autism Awareness Walk-a-thon will begin at 10 a.m. at Agamont Park, overlooking the town pier and Frenchman’s Bay, and proceed up Main Street to Mount Desert Street, turn right onto Eden Street, then turn right on Cottage Street and continue back to Agamont Park.
“Everyone is encouraged, invited and welcome to join us and cheer on these enthusiastic adults and children who not only hope to raise awareness of autism, but also to raise funds for their programs,” observes Tony Zambrano, executive director of Downeast Horizons.
“This is another example of how we can learn from and about children with autism,” adds Ashley Johnson, resource coordinator at Downeast Horizons.
Since 1974 Downeast Horizons (www.dehi.org) has been devoted to the establishment of community-based services for local people with developmental disabilities and their families. Downeast Horizons is a non-profit organization helping to serve these needs in Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Waldo Counties, including programs in Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Deer Isle, Bangor and Brewer.
