ROCKLAND, Maine — Author Marianne Cushing and Chef Michele Ragussis pair up to host “Read, White and Seafood,” a book signing and food tasting event 3-6 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at The Pearl on the Pier, 275 Main St.
This event will be the final stop in a week-long book signing tour celebrating Cushing’s debut novel, “Mahalas Lane.”
Set in Owls Head and surrounding Rockland, “Mahalas Lane” was inspired by the author’s real life 2008 stay in the cottage on the lane that bears the novel’s name. The book is the story of Madi Lyons, an aspiring creative director from New York City, who arrives on the rocky shores of Maine, hoping for a relaxing respite from Madison Avenue’s relentless grind. Shortly after settling in at her quaint rental cottage, she is awoken by the local sheriff with startling news: A woman has been murdered on her private beach. A violent encounter next door and an elusive stranger draw Madi deeper into Mahalas Lane’s mysterious past, while a magnetic attraction propels her into the sheriff’s welcoming arms.
“As an independent author, I was inspired to see Michele return to New England to follow her passion. As a veteran chef and finalist on Food Network Star, her talents could have taken her anywhere yet she chose the coast of Maine,” says Cushing of The Pearl’s executive chef. “That I can relate to.”
Michele Ragussis is once again back in Rockland as resident chef of The Pearl on the Pier this summer, serving up coastal cuisine as inspired as the Rockland Harbor view. She says of the somewhat unusual pairing of food and fiction this event offers, “What could be better than commemorating our country’s independence with great local food, great local people, and then taking home a great local book to remember us by.”
