Celebrate “Nic and Nellie” book release in Rockland
Artist Astrid Sheckels to make four appearances for new picture book
YARMOUTH, MAINE (June 10, 2013)—Nic is so excited to be spending an entire summer on a Maine island with her grandparents. But when her grand adventure finally begins, she faces tears and homesickness, rather than joy and freedom. Will it ever get better? Astrid Sheckels’ gorgeously illustrated new picture book “Nic and Nellie” tells the heartwarming story of a young girl who, along with her beloved dog, learns that unfamiliar things really aren’t so scary, and that often new friends can be found around every corner, even in old row boats, tidal ponds, and stinky mud flats.
Award-winning picture book illustrator Sheckels once again brings coastal images to life with her beautiful watercolors, as she did with “The Fish House Door” and “The Scallop Christmas.” Nic and Nellie also represents Sheckels’ debut as a children’s book author.
“It has been a joy to work with Astrid since we published her first children’s book, as the illustrator of ‘The Scallop Christmas,’ ” said Dean L. Lunt, Islandport Press publisher and editor-in-chief. “And we could not be more thrilled to now play a role in developing her first book as both author and illustrator. We believe Astrid is a special talent.”
Archipelago in Rockland will host a special book release celebration for “Nic and Nellie” on July 11 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This summer, Islandport Press and The Island Institute, two Maine-based organizations, are teaming in a promotion and fundraising effort to celebrate island life, support education, and help promote childhood literacy and the joy of reading. As part of that effort, Islandport will donate 10 percent of the revenue generated by sales of “Nic and Nellie,” “The Fish House Door,” and “The Scallop Christmas” to the Island Institute’s Maine Island Scholarship Program.
In addition to the Archipelago event, Sheckels will make three other Maine appearances in July to celebrate the release of her new book. Her appearance schedule is:
