Art Space Gallery invites you an opening reception on Friday evening, July 4. Four of the nineteen venerable artists at Art Space Gallery will exhibit new works that are showcased in the gallery’s front room.
One of Art Space Gallery’s new members is Wendy Wight, who will be exhibiting her brightly colored coastal landscapes and seascapes. Wight abstracts the scenery using multiple horizon lines, and places “postcards” within these bold paintings. Working on location is a new and exciting practice for her, where she’s learned that sunscreen, bug spray, and gear to handle the ever-changing Maine elements are a must!
Laurie Bellmore has a colorful array of framed acrylic paintings on canvas that depict the Maine coast, featuring islands, lobster boats, and buoys. A native of Rockland, Bellmore loves to paint the nautical surroundings that have been a prominent part of her life since childhood. The Maine coast is always her subject matter in all of her artwork, which also includes jewelry and photography.
Barbara Fischer Eldred’s artwork has a strong connection to the American Southwest, particularly Native Americans and other native clans. Her current monoprints continue that tradition and concentrate on portraying faces. Eldred often uses the Native American coiling method to hand build elaborate clay works as well, including glazed sculpture and useable art, such as platters.
Charles Laurier Dufour’s award-winning fine art nude photography will focus on “inner space”. In this series, contrast is emphasized, including the soft human figures juxtaposed with harsh interiors of abandoned spaces, the plays between light and dark, and the blurred boundaries that sometimes separate imagination from reality. Dufour will also exhibit coastal nudes in the rear gallery area.
Art Space Gallery features works by nineteen artists of various media and genres distributed across three rooms and hallway. The artists’ reception will begin at 5 pm and continue until 8 pm on Friday, July 4. Most of the artists will be on hand to share refreshments and conversation with you. Art Space Gallery is located at 342 Main Street in Rockland, directly across the street from the Strand Theater. For more information and examples of the members’ artwork, go to www.artspacemaine.com.
