SULLIVAN, Maine — Summary: Frenchman’s Bay Library in Sullivan holds its largest annual fund raising event on June 22 & 23 — a book and bake sale.

Frenchman’s Bay Library’s major fund raising event annually is a large and well attended Book and Bake Sale. This year it has been scheduled for June 22nd and 23rd in the Library wing of the Sorrento-Sullivan Recreation Center on Route 1 in Sullivan.

On Friday June 22 from 5-7 p.m. the special Dealers’ and Donors’ Book Preview is available for a $5 entrance fee at the side door on the West end of the Rec. Center. There will be no Bake Sale items for sale on Friday. On Saturday, June 23 the Book and Bake Sale is open to the public with no entrance fee from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Books will be available in the Library basement rooms, in the Rec. Center Community Room, in the Library itself, and, weather permitting, in the parking lot. Jennifer Reece, director of the Library, has announced that prices will be very reasonable, with paperbacks being sold by the bagful, and most hardbacks for $1 or $2. There will also be many VHS tapes sold by the bagful to those still using VCR technology. “Of special interest this year is the strong collection of biographies we have “weeded” from our shelves,” says Reece. The Library has also received donations of some new, contemporary books, both novels and non-fiction, as well as many lightly used ones. Classic and contemporary children’s books will also be on sale. Home baked cookies, cakes, pies, breads, and other treats will be available for sale in the Library Lobby. The Monday Night Knitters Club members have also gathered and donated some craft items in support of this annual fund raising event. “It is our biggest fun raising event of the year” said Reece, “and we are very grateful to our friends and patrons for the ways in which they support it with their volunteering efforts and with their purchasing power.”

Frenchman’s Bay Library has been part of the Sullivan-Sorrento Community since 1948 and has been housed in the Recreation Center since it was built in the 1950s. It is open 15 hours a week on the following schedule: Mondays 5-8 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-5 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. The Library employs two part-time staff members and a large number of active volunteer assistants and Board members. It is an independent not-for-profit organization, receiving partial funding from the towns of Sullivan and Sorrento (and, in 2011-12, Hancock) and from grants, bequests, and donations from the community.
