Beloved pop folk singer, DAR WILLIAMS, who has been described by The New Yorker as “one of America’s very best singer-songwriters” will play at the Gates Community Center at College of the Atlantic on November 8, 2014.

A veteran of the New England folk scene with ten albums under her belt, she emerged nationally in the mid-1990s, winning fans with her idiosyncratic songwriting, acerbic wit and lovely soprano voice. Williams takes pains to avoid the coy and the quirky; her songwriting and performing style has been compared to that of Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez (an early fan), but with a few acidic and at times hilarious twists.

Williams’ growth as an individual has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist. On one level, the sizable body of work accumulated is a continuing narrative of her life — what she’s experienced and what she’s observed during her years of intensive touring. On another, it forms a detailed look at the course of modern-day existence in the twenty years since Williams released her debut album, The Honesty Room. Throughout her career, Williams has employed a reporter’s keen eye and a fiction writer’s feel for nuance in the act of confronting what she’s described as “the big picture of how people approach life,” doing by examining and illuminating the minute details.

Selling over a million albums during her career, Williams has been named one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her time by Rolling Stone, Spin, and Paste Magazine. NPR’s World Café praised her “smart and serious songs with her trademark wit.” Williams recently released her tenth album, 2012’s highly praised In The Time of Gods, which ranks right up there with her best work. Plain spoken and heartfelt, yet inspired and ambitious, she stands as one of the most prolific and endearing singer-songwriters of contemporary folk today.

“Dar Williams, one of America’s very best singer-songwriters… Her songs are beautiful. Some are like finely crafted short stories. They are variously, devastatingly moving, tenderly funny, subtle without being in any way inaccessible, and utterly fresh—not a cliché or a clunker in her entire songbook.” – The New Yorker

“Seasons change, but Williams remains both ambitious and pleasingly plainspoken.” – Rolling Stone

“A new generation of pop-folk enthusiasts lauds her as one of the genre’s central figures.” – Paste Magazine

“One of our most thoughtful singer-songwriters.” – New York Daily News
