“4th of July Pies” is the title of Alone Moose Gallery’s 37th anniversary theme show coming up June 17-July 5th on the Bar Harbor Waterfront.
Hampden painter Peg Hanson created ten acrylic pie paintings with names like “Pouring the Cream”, from a study of the pies by the pie maker at Dysart’s Truck Stop in Bangor. “Jane’s Pie” shows the hands of Jane Heath from Bangor’s Frank’s Bakery holding a cherry pie. Peg says, “Some of my happiest times in childhood were creating in the kitchen, on the dining room table, and at the sewing machine anything that could be made with whatever was on hand. My mother gave me free reign and I learned to trust my abilities and follow my heart.” She followed her heart to a BFA from the University of Southern Maine.
Also on hand for the colorful pie show will be a pie painting by gallery owner Ivan Rasmussen called “Murder on a Blueberry Pie” as well as handmade clay pie plates ready for the baking by Maine potters Rocky Mann, Richard Robertson, Robbie Portela and Charlie Grosjean.
Peg Hanson and Ivan Rasmussen will be at the gallery during the Friday, June 22, Legacy of the Arts ART walk from 5 pm to 8 pm to share their pie painting stories. Register for a 4th of July pie by island pie maker extraordinaire Catherine Burdette of Somesville, to be drawn on July 3rd just in time for someone’s 4th of July picnic or party.
