College Challenged to Raise 240 Gifts in 24 Hours on June 4

BAR HARBOR, ME—A donor to College of the Atlantic has offered a challenge: “Collect 240 gifts in 24 hours and I will give you $24,000.” COA expects to meet that challenge on June 4, 2013.

“This challenge comes at the perfect time,” says President Darron Collins, PhD, a 1992 alumnus of the college. “Our annual fund goal of $1 million is behind; and our fiscal year ends June 30. The annual fund is critical to providing financial aid, salaries, and student support. This all-out push will ensure we meet our obligations and fulfill our mission.”

The COA annual fund goal is $1,005,000. To date, just over $600,000 has been raised. Given COA’s generous financial aid, tuition and endowment income are not sufficient to meet the college’s operating expenses. The annual fund covers the gap, bringing much needed support to all programs, enhancements to the academic curriculum, student life, facility maintenance, financial aid, and community outreach.

Says Lynn Boulger, Dean of Institutional Advancement, “We are seeing more and more students with higher financial aid needs and so we’re asking that everyone can dig a little bit deeper. Though we are behind where we were this time last year, we expect to be able to catch up in the last six weeks of the fiscal year. We know that this is a hard time for some, but every gift will count in this challenge, no matter the size!”

To participate, call 207-801-5622 or 207-801-5621, send a check dated June 4 to COA 24 Hour Challenge / Development Office / 105 Eden St. / Bar Harbor, ME 04609, or go online to coa.edu/donatenow.

College of the Atlantic was founded in 1969 on the premise that education should go beyond understanding the world as it is, to enabling students to actively shape its future. A leader in experiential education and environmental stewardship, COA has pioneered a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to learning—human ecology—that develops the kinds of creative thinkers and doers needed by all sectors of society in addressing the compelling and growing needs of our world.
