Caption for Photo (attached): Left to right: Bangor High students Madeleine Coffey, Leah Jones, and Toby Jones participated in the 2012 Maine Youth in Government program at the State House this past weekend. The three-day program attracted 162 students from across the state who assumed roles as representatives, senators, Governor, officers, and news journalists. The three BHS participants got a firsthand view of the role of representative, learning how to draft bills, participate in committee hearings, debate bills on the floor of House chambers, and determine the fate of bills during voting. Students elected Kelsey Sicard of Bonny Eagle High School as next year’s Youth in Government Governor. Lonney Steeves of the Winthrop YMCA is director of the program started in 1942 and has served for the past 22 years.
