The Bangor Public Library continues the summer music tradition with the 17th Annual Summer Music Series, sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. Kicking off is everyone’s favorite The Bangor Band on Tuesday, June 10th. All performances, weather permitting, will be played in Peirce Park, which is just outside the Library, at 7:00 p.m.
“If it’s summer in our city, it must be time to enjoy The Bangor Band,” says Barbara McDade, Director of the Bangor Public Library. “We are extremely thankful that they kick off our Summer Music Series each year. This year will also be a send off to the Library as our community currently knows it as the interior renovation will begin late August.”
“As Maine’s largest independent bank, we are committed to supporting organizations and activities that advance community development and improve the quality of life in our Maine communities and supporting the Bangor Public Library is an example of our commitment,” says Lisa Bird, Assistant Vice President, Bangor Savings Bank.
The Summer Music Series began as a way to showcase the newest addition of the Library by featuring the arts. One of the first performances was by a local big band accompanied with a dance for the public. Mr. Norman Minsky, former board member and mayor, grew up in Bangor where the lesson was always to be quiet in the Library – so featuring live music and dancing in the lobby was a welcomed change. This idea developed into the Summer Music Series that features local performers and a “taste” of music of all genres.
June will also feature local bands Six Basin Street on Wednesday, June 18 and the Rotating Taps on Wednesday, June 25. The Summer Music Series will occur every Wednesday night through August 13.
The Bangor Band is one of the oldest, continuous community bands in the United States. Performing concerts at various venues in the Greater Bangor area, they have been an iconic symbol for the community since their first season in 1859.
Music is an important part of the Bangor Public Library. The Library serves as the music library for the Bangor Symphony, the District 5 band, and choral music for area choruses to borrow. The Summer Music Series is just one of the many programs offered to the public free of charge.
