AUGUSTA—The Hands Around the Capitol Rally, marking and mourning the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, will be held in Augusta on Saturday, Jan. 12. The rally and march are being organized by the Maine Right to Life Committee, which was founded to protect and uphold the dignity and worth of every human life from conception to natural death.

Here is a schedule for the day, which includes a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert P. Deeley:

10 a.m.        Mass at St. Mary of the Assumption Church on 41 Western Avenue in Augusta (celebrated by Bishop Deeley)

11 a.m.        Gathering at the St. Michael School gymnasium next to the church

11:15 a.m.   Rally with Bishop Deeley and pro-life leaders from across Maine

12:15 p.m.   March to the State House

12:30 p.m.   Participants will join hands in silent protest while the capitol bell is rung 46 times, once for each year that has passed since the Roe v. Wade ruling.

Participants are welcome to attend some or all of the events on January 12.

If you can’t make it on Saturday but still want to support the cause, a breakfast benefiting the Maine Right to Life Committee will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 8:45 a.m. to noon at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, located on 150 Black Point Road in Scarborough. The breakfast will feature scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes, bacon, sausage, tater tots, beans, seasonal fruit, and a variety of drinks. Admission is $6.50 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for children (ages 5-12), and free for children four and under.

In addition, high school youth and accompanying adults will join Bishop Deeley on a diocesan pilgrimage to the 2019 March for Life in Washington, D.C. The pilgrimage (Jan. 17-19) will include attendance at the opening Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the march itself, and other events. The March for Life began as a small demonstration and rapidly grew to become the largest pro-life event in the world. The peaceful demonstration has followed on the somber anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision every year since 1973.
