PEAKS ISLAND — Julie Larry will give a free talk from 6-7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5th Maine Regiment Museum, 45 Seashore Ave, on the history of late 19th century Peaks Island. Peaks Island was famous for its summer entertainment and earned the nickname “Coney Island of Maine.” The island’s development as a tourist destination was spurred in part by the growth of steamship travel and rising leisure time among the American middle class.
Learn more about this period of Peaks Island’s history and the historic buildings and places that are a reminder of the island’s hey-day as an amusement destination.
Registration is strongly encouraged here. Space is limited.
We are hosting two other Neighborhood History Nights featuring East Deering on Oct. 18 and Nason’s Corner on Oct. 25. Visit www.portlandlandmarks.org/events for more details .
