ROCKPORT — George’s River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) welcomes Dan Pierce, owner and founder of Maine Tenkara Guide and the first registered Maine fishing guide to guide exclusively tenkara. Pierce was introduced to the tenkara method of fly-fishing over 10 years ago and has been doing it exclusively for over 6 years, primarily in the rivers and lakes of northwestern Maine. Praised for its simplicity, tenkara is the traditional Japanese form of fly-fishing that uses minimum equipment consisting of a rod, a line, and a fly (no reel). Tenkara can be learned by nearly every individual at almost any age, and allows anglers to focus more attention on fishing rather than equipment. Pierce will be presenting on tenkara both in the traditional Japanese practice and how it is commonly fished here in the US. Topics to be covered include equipment (rod, line, fly), how to choose a rod and line, warm water and cold water tenkara, casting, landing fish, wet wading, companies / brands, and more!
Trout Unlimited is a non-profit organization with a mission dedicated to conserve, protect and restore North America’s cold water fisheries and their watersheds. The GRTU meeting December 11 will be held in the upstairs mezzanine at Flatbread Company in Rockport. The meeting will start at 6 pm with an informal gathering for those who wish to converse and enjoy a casual meal. The featured presentation begins at 7 pm. GRTU conducts a raffle directly following the speaker. Membership is open to all, and the George’s River chapter welcomes individuals from midcoast and downeast Maine. Meetings are free and open to the public. Visit with us on Facebook or online at www.georgesrivertu.org .
