“The Capitol Steps” to perform at annual dinner honoring UMaine System Chancellor James Page, former education commissioner James Rier, and others

AUGUSTA, ME – The Maine State Chamber of Commerce will honor three individuals and one organization for their contributions to Maine’s economy at the chamber’s annual dinner on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta. University of Maine System Chancellor James Page, former education commissioner James Rier, Craig Pendleton of the Biddeford+Saco Chamber of Commerce+Industry, and the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority will be celebrated at a 5:30 p.m. awards ceremony.

Chancellor James H. (Jim) Page will be presented with the Maine Business Hall of Fame award named in remembrance of Alton “Chuck” Cianchette. This annual award recognizes the contributions of an individual who demonstrates public service leadership, business success, and most importantly, reflects Cianchette’s values and embodies his spirit through compassion, courage, and commitment. A business owner and employer, an academic, and since 2012 Chancellor of Maine’s Public Universities, Dr. Page’s vision and collaborative leadership style truly exemplify the qualities this honor is intended to recognize.

James E. (Jim) Rier. Jr., former commissioner of the Maine Department of Education, will be awarded the Chamber’s President’s Recognition Award. This honor is presented each year to a company or individual who demonstrates involvement in promoting the mission and activities of the Maine State Chamber. From 1995 to today, Jim Rier’s commitment to education in Maine is legendary and unparalleled. His first-hand, in-depth knowledge of Maine’s education system, including its complex funding formula, made him and his support invaluable to the chamber during the 2016 election cycle during which the chamber opposed the 3% surtax referendum.

Craig A. Pendleton, executive director of the Biddeford+Saco Chamber of Commerce+Industry, will receive the Chamber Professional of the Year award. This award is given to a local chamber professional in recognition of their hard work and dedication to their community. Pendleton’s accomplishments in growing the Biddeford+Saco Chamber of Commerce+Industry are numerous, and include elevating the local chamber’s role and position in the communities it serves, growing its membership by more than 125 members, adding the Town of Waterboro to its family, and opening a Welcome Center for visitors, tourism and promotion of members.

The Maine State Chamber is pleased to announce a new award this year – the Maine E.N.V.Y. award. This annual award is given to an organization or initiative whose regional success is enviable. It recognizes the significance of their Economic contribution to the region, their ability to recognize and address a Need, and the required Vision to attain success. The Maine E.N.V.Y. award is presented to champions of Yankee ingenuity, the entrepreneurial spirit for which our state is known around the globe. This year’s E.N.V.Y. Award will be presented to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA) for their incredible success and innovation in developing Brunswick Landing: Maine’s Center for Innovation at the former Naval Air Station Brunswick (NASB).

The Washington, D.C.-based political satirical ensemble The Capitol Steps will perform for more than 400 attendees following the awards ceremony. The evening will begin with the annual Taste of Maine Reception.
