BANGOR, Maine – A few openings remain for Champ Camp, a week-long residential camp for children who have been or are currently being treated for cancer and their families. Champ Camp is scheduled for Sunday, June 29, through Saturday, August 5, at the Bangor YMCA Wilderness Center at Camp Jordan.

“Champ Camp is an opportunity for children to enjoy a full week of fun summer camp activities and forget about their experience with cancer,” says Diane Dickerson, CEO and CMO, Bangor YMCA. “We welcome kids and their families from all over Maine. While the focus is on personal growth, exploration, and fun, we’re able to meet the specialized medical, emotional, and psychological needs of campers who have been affected by cancer.”

Campers will enjoy all that Camp Jordan has to offer, including swimming, hiking, sporting activities, crafts, campfires, and more. Medical personnel from EMMC in Bangor and Mercy Hospital in Portland will be on hand around the clock to meet campers’ healthcare needs. Treatment is available nearby at EMMC Cancer Care in Brewer if needed.

Champ Camp welcomes children age four through high school who are being treated for cancer or who have received treatment in the last ten years. Siblings of cancer survivors are also welcome. Campers younger than seven years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The week’s activities were designed and coordinated by the YMCA and EMMC child life specialists.

“EMMC is proud to be a partner in Champ Camp,” says Nadine Bullion, LCSW, support services manager at EMMC Cancer Care. “I encourage anyone who knows a child who could benefit from camp to contact us. It’s going to be an extraordinary week for campers that will create lasting memories.”

Camp is offered free of charge due to the generosity of an anonymous donor through the EMMC Foundation and the support of EMMC and the Bangor YMCA. Registrations will be accepted through Friday, June 27. To find out more or to register, please visit or call 941-2808.
