Workshop: DRAWING CLOSE TO THE EARTH
Dates: May 10-11, 2014, 10 AM – 4 PM each day
Location: Split Rock Cove and Georges River Land Trust preserves, South Thomaston, Maine
Description: An art workshop sponsored by 26 Split Rock Cove in collaboration with the Georges River Land Trust, and with Dudley Zopp, instructor
26 Split Rock Cove, S. Thomaston, ME, is delighted to announce that Lincolnville artist Dudley Zopp will teach the following workshop – Drawing Close to the Earth – at sites that are part of the Georges River Land Trust. Workshop dates are Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11, 2014, from 10 – 4 each day.
Drawing Close to the Earth is a workshop designed for those who care about bringing their respect for the natural world into their art making. Using drawing, painting, and journaling, students will develop strategies for gaining an understanding of the earth and our responsibilities as humans in the natural world.
The first day of the workshop will take place at the Trolley Marsh Preserve on Rt. 131. After meeting at the site, we will hike to the river where Zopp will challenge our observation skills and awareness to our surroundings through a series of exercises. Students will find their own ‘place’ to draw and paint, breaking for lunch, and returning again to other favorite places in the preserve.
On Sunday we will travel to a second site. Students will come away from the workshop with improved drawing/painting skills, and most importantly with new ways of accessing the earth through their senses. Participants will be encouraged to see with their ears, draw with their eyes, and listen with their hands.
Zopp has taught drawing at the university level, and serves as Artist-Teacher for the MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. The recipient of several grants and fellowships, Zopp’s work has been exhibited widely in New England and nationally.
All levels are welcome to this workshop. To enroll call Sandy Weisman at 596-7624, or visit www.26splitrockcove.com and go to Workshops.
